“Peace begins at home,” the saying goes. But how can we have peaceful relations with each other, with ourselves, with other nations, when we’re demanding and funding the unnecessary pain and death of our animal cousins? Gary Francione and Anna Charlton are lawyers and professors at Rutgers University in Newark New Jersey. Among their many other accomplishments they teach animal rights courses and seminars, and have authored a book titled Eat Like You Care: An Examination of the Morality of Eating Animals. I spend the hour talking with Anna and Gary about issues of environment, climate change, ahimsa, the difference between animal liberation and animal “welfare,” and how we can all embrace a more compassionate and healthy lifestyle through the personal choices we make every day.
