Winds of Change – Sept 27, 2012 – Updates from the UBCM with Andrew Macleod; Art, Music, Theatre, and Social Expression with Evalyn Parry

This week in Victoria, the UBCM (Union of BC Municipalities) is bringing together elected officials from municipal governments across British Columbia.  I attended two rallies – one with the DeerSafe Victoria group, the other a response to a sponsored dinner with Calgary based Canadian Association Petroleum Producers (photos are here).  Calgary is not in British Columbia, it’s in Alberta, but in order to ship the dirty bitumen tar across the north, compliance will be needed from various levels of government in both provinces.  Facing unprecedented opposition from environmentalists and Indigenous groups, the rightful gatekeepers to their traditional lands, CAPP is vigorously lobbying politicians.  Also, from the UBCM, Tyee reporter Andrew Macleod with an update on some of the speechifying and resolutions happening inside the conference.  In the second half, the fabulously talented Canadian poet/musician Evalyn Parry shares stories about her various artistic projects, and tells us what it was like to visit Canada’s far north (the next resource frontier) this past summer.
