Winds of Change Feb 2 12 – Orca member Enid Mary, and MLA Jagrup Brar

While Liberal MLA and current Minister of Health Mike de Jong was schmoozing with doctors and lawyers at a conference held in an exclusive resort in Jamaica last month (promoting private hospitals and ideas about penalizing smokers and others who knowingly engage in harmful activities), NDP MLA Jagrup Brar was finishing up the final days of his Welfare Challenge.  Jagrup spent the month of January (typically the most difficult month, cold, and following on the heels of the season of giving) attempting to live on the $610 allocated to people hard on their luck in our province, and learned much about “the system” and its relationship to poverty from his own personal experience, and from the many hundreds of people he spoke with.  In the first half, concerned Vancouver Island resident Enid Mary, a member of the Organized Regional Communities in Action, airs concerns about what passes for “democracy” in the Regional District of Nanaimo.
