International pressure for regime change in Syria mounted last week, as a majority in the UN General Assembly voted in support of the Arab League’s call that president Bashar al-Assad step down on “humanitarian grounds.” It was essentially the same motion stymied by Russian and Chinese vetoes in the UN’s Security Council the week before. The move is seen by some as a stepping-stone to military intervention by NATO and the West a la Libya. Since that vote, Iran has sent two warships into port in Syria, even as rhetoric from the US and its allies heightens against both Syria and Iran. Last week too, I hosted on-line journalist and Infowars.com associate editor, Patrick Henningsen to talk about his recent articles on the unfolding situation in Syria. Communication complications unfortunately shortened our interview, so I will remedy that this week in the first half with journalist, editor, and founder of the web news site, 21st Century Wire, Patrick Henningsen. And; the office of British Columbia’s Auditor-General last week released a withering report on the BC Liberal’s handling of the province’s forest resource and wildlife management. In its audit, three fundamental questions were put to test the government’s performance: 1. are timber objectives clearly defined. 2. are appropriate management practices being adhered to. And, 3. are “timber results” being properly monitored and reported. Tria Donaldson is Pacific Coast Campaigner with the Wilderness Committee, billed as the largest membership-based wilderness preservation organization in B.C. A report titled “Out of Sight: Policing Poverty in Victoria (Coast & Straits Salish Territories)” was recently released by the Vancouver Island Public Interest Research Group (VIPIRG). Mark Willson speaks about the report and its astonishing findings. A ‘peer research’ approach established trust based relationships with representatives from the street community who revealed that a tremendous amount of social profiling goes on in our fair city. People are harassed simply because they look homeless or poor. VIPIRG and friends believe that increasing the police budget is not the solution, that trying to police away poverty isn’t a fair or just or fiscally responsible approach. In the second half, a different use of provincial tax dollars has resulted in a friendly, creative, community building centre known as BikeWorks in Duncan BC. Everyone, and especially youth, are welcome there to participate in constructive art projects, fix their bikes, buy a bike by donation, get off the streets, find some friends, and be a contributing member of society. Dave Ehle and Louise Nadeau share their enthusiasm and information about the BikeWorks project.

This coming Sunday, the UVic department of Social Justice hosts the public forum and presentation, ‘The Campaign to End the Blockade of Gaza – Canada’s Role, featuring Palestine solidarity activist, Ehab Lotayaf. Ehab, or “Captain Ehab” as at least one detractor has dubbed him, was a member of the Freedom Waves aid flotilla aboard the Canadian ship Tahrir last year. Local social justice activist, Kevin Neish is a flotilla veteran, having been aboard the Turkish ship, Mavi Marmara when it was attacked by Israeli commandos in international waters. Kevin will join us in the first half to discuss the flotilla campaigns and his upcoming mission to El Salvador as an elections observer. And; a year after the revolution in Tunisia there has been little improvement in the standard of living for the average Tunisian; and, in Egypt, the military still rules and has violently cracked down on opponents, imprisoning thousands through military commission trials. In Libya, where a revolt of another sort led to the murder of former leader Moammar Gaddafy, and where the bona fides of the revolutionaries was questioned from the outset, it seems their struggle has liberated nothing more than trans-national corporations’ access to the country’s resources and reconstruction contracts. And then there’s Syria, where 2012 is proving to be for them what 2011 was for Libya. Patrick Henningsen is a UK-based pundit, commentator, online journalist, and founder of 21st Century Wire, a news service launched during the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Summit. David W. Johnston is a biological oceanographer and conservation biologist at Duke University’s Marine Lab. His focus is on framing ecology and the habitat needs of marine animals in relation to conservation. He is currently working on projects studying marine vertebrates, and the design and utility of marine protected areas for them, emphasizing the effects of climate change on marine animals and the sustainability of incidental mortality and directed harvests of marine animals. Johnston is lead author on the newly published paper, ‘The Effects of Climate Change on Harp Seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus),’ and if its conclusions are correct, continuing the east coast commercial seal hunt, (or “cull”, as it is often characterized by governments) could stress targeted populations beyond recovery. David W. Johnston in the first half. And; former Gorilla Radio guest, Richard Boyce will present his new film, ‘Rainforest – The Limit of Splendour’ at this year’s Victoria Film Festival. Richard is a long-time island social justice and environment activist, whose kayak trip through Vancouver Island’s pristine East Creek and Klaskish Inlet with Ingmar Lee led to the seven year odyssey of exploration culminating in the film. He has been touring festivals across the country, with ‘Raincoast,’ screening in Montreal, Vancouver, and winning the Mountain Culture Film Award at Whistler. While Liberal MLA and current Minister of Health Mike de Jong was schmoozing with doctors and lawyers at a conference held in an exclusive resort in Jamaica last month (promoting private hospitals and ideas about penalizing smokers and others who knowingly engage in harmful activities), NDP MLA Jagrup Brar was finishing up the final days of his Welfare Challenge. Jagrup spent the month of January (typically the most difficult month, cold, and following on the heels of the season of giving) attempting to live on the $610 allocated to people hard on their luck in our province, and learned much about “the system” and its relationship to poverty from his own personal experience, and from the many hundreds of people he spoke with. In the first half, concerned Vancouver Island resident Enid Mary, a member of the Organized Regional Communities in Action, airs concerns about what passes for “democracy” in the Regional District of Nanaimo.

Kim Ives is founder of, and contributing editor to Haiti Liberté, a newspaper with offices in Haiti and New York, and has more than twenty years experience reporting with the paper, Haiti Progrès, and hosts the weekly, WBAI New York radio program, ‘Haiti: The Struggle Continues.’ Kim also hosts Haitian TV’s ‘Kafou Verite,’ produced by Haiti Liberté, and is a filmmaker who has collaborated on many films documenting human rights abuses, trade struggle, and conflicts between the island’s peasant farmers and corrupt State enterprises, and has contributed to the books, ‘Dangerous Crossroads,’ ‘The Haiti Files,’ and Haiti: A Slave Revolution.’ His most recent is ‘Tectonic Shifts.’ Kim Ives in the first half. And; it’s a case that could break new ground in the titanic battle to remove Atlantic Salmon fish farms from the waters of the coast of B.C. Right now, Don Staniford is being sued by Mainstream Canada, a subsidiary of Cermaq, a fish farm trans-national whose single majority stock-holder is the Norwegian government. Mainstream lawyers assert Staniford “disseminated and published defamatory and false statements about the company”on the Global Alliance Against Industrial Aqauaculture, or GAAIA site. GAAIA’s web server dropped the site under pressure, but it has now been replaced by the less noxious(?) Salmonfarmingkills.com. Don Staniford and B.C.’s “Salmon versus Goliath” in the second half.
